The new orchid database software release from OrchidWiz, named Encyclopedia 4.0, takes the number of orchid images available to nearly 20,500, the most ever published in an orchid database. The software also adds ease-of-use features; as well as detailed taxonomic and cultivation data for thousands of orchid species.
"We are honored to be able to publish orchid species cultivation data sourced from the work of Charles Baker with his permission," says Alex Maximiano, Managing Director at OrchidWiz. "Mr. Baker is a former meteorologist for the National Weather Service and one of the world's top experts on orchid culture. His compilation work done over the last two decades is a treasure to the orchid world."
In less than three weeks, Encyclopedia 4.0 has been installed in nearly 500 computers owned by users who pre-purchased the software. So far, users have been raving about it.
"You cannot believe the fabulous additions made to this program," says Judy Russ, a hobby grower in Florida. "It has mega-pictures added plus a pronunciation key to all genera and species. When you enter a species, you get the cultural information from Charles Baker, renowned taxonomist. You can click through the tabs for humidity, water, temperature, etc. for that species. You can search the AOS bulletins and AOS magazines by author or title. You can list orchids from a certain area such as Florida, or list just orchids of a certain genera that are cool growing, or by other characteristics. You can compare images of the four top species in the background of a hybrid. You can "hover" over any node in the text tree and the picture of that orchid pops up! I haven't even discovered half the treasures that lie within this much improved program. Also, it is much easier to navigate. What a great study tool to enhance your knowledge and love of orchids, not to mention the help it is to grow your orchids under the right conditions. A must have for every orchid enthusiast."
